The Rural Industry Task Force
reported
on the skills development
activities outlined in its Action Plan in late 2004. Key outcomes include:
• the industry’s improved ability to promote Rural careers and change
attitudes to rural industry employment and
training opportunities following the production and successful uptake of the
ONtrack: Real skills rural future CD-ROM and associated careers materials
(see the ONtrack website
http://www.ruralskills.com.au/Ontrack );
• other activities to help develop young people for careers in rural
industry, through new school based New Apprenticeships and structured work
place learning;
• improved promotion of rural training packages and rural New
Apprenticeships to employers and training bodies;
• the development of a new rural operations apprenticeship and
qualifications that enable the flexible development of
cross industry skills and competencies, and will help to transform seasonal
jobs into year round positions;
• improving the skills of farmers in recruiting and inducting workers
through the production and promotion in 2003 of
the Farm Recruitment Kit ( CD-Rom, magazine website
www.farmrecruit.com.au );
• recognition of the need for rural industry to build on previous levels of
skills development and training activity
as part of the post drought recovery process;
• and a range of recommendations for future action.
